I never watched Hallmark until this last Christmas when I was feeling a little blue. I enjoyed some of the network's silly holiday movies and saw an ad for this series, so gave it a try. I'll admit my preferences tend to fall into the "Person of Interest," "Being Human," and "Ripper Street" types of shows rather than what might be described as "family" fare. But I value the TV version of comfort food as well. It serves a purpose.I've never read the books on which this show is based, and know nothing about this time period. So the basic situation in which it is placed is all pretty much new to me. I have no concept how "realistic" it is.I do sort of of like "When Call the Heart," and the pilot gripped me enough to keep me watching. And, to be honest, I really like the male lead (Mountie Jack played by Australian actor Daniel Lissing). He's lovely to look at, and his serious, almost burning intensity is mesmerizing.(I was glad they finally gave his adorable dog a name! Yay Rip!) I'm not overly fond of the female lead (Erin Krakow). Nothing personal. I don't find her particularly attractive, especially when she smiles. She's just a little too sweet for my tastes. My problem, to be sure.And if I don't particularly care for Elizabeth Thatcher, I REALLY, REALLY don't like her sister, Julie. They can't get rid of that annoying, dreadful character fast enough for me. Dear Producers: Please send her back to The Big City! The stories seem slow and very predictable. I hope the ponderousness will improve as the series progresses, but I suspect it won't. It's just slow going -- a real slog. As another reviewer stated, there's not much you need to be worried about as far as the main characters coming out of each week's plot line safe, sound and well. There are very clear-cut lines marking who are the "good" people (almost everyone) and who are the not-so-good (Henry Gowen for example). No ambiguity there.And we are all in for a very long, sometimes tedious, courtship, with many ups and downs between the two main characters, I'm sure! There is some beautiful scenery to be seen here. I especially loved the scene with Lissing and Krakow in the rowboat on the lake.And it's fun seeing some of the actors who played favorite minor characters in Stargate! If there's one thing that really bugs me about this show, it's the way the characters speak. I suspect this is intentional, but I'm not sure. There's a very particular kind of cadence and formality of language (the stiffness of the delivery parallels the stiffness of body language). It's a slow and deliberate and well-pronounced delivery of lines. It feels unnatural to me and it is distracting. But who knows? Maybe that's the way the spoke back then.It is, obviously, not a very "diverse" cast. That may be a reflection of the time, and place, but it, too, is distracting to me.Ultimately, it is nice to have a show like this to look forward to each Saturday.
