Sadly, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore has not taken off the ground and, at this point, appears not to have enough thrust to ever do so. It is plagued by a multitude of problems.I don't think anyone expected Wilmore to be Colbert, but Wilmore needed to find his own voice, his own delivery style, much the way Colbert and Stewart did. Even John Oliver found his own style, which, although somewhat awkward, works well for him. Wilmore has failed horribly in this department. He may be a good comedy writer, but he simply lacks the personality and charisma to carry a comedy show.When Colbert left it seems he didn't just sell off everything, including his entire set, and take his wit and personality with him. The writers went as well. The jokes being written for Wilmore are flat and stale most of the time. I found myself spitting my drink on more than one occasion watching Colbert and Stewart. Not so with Larry Wilmore. The satire is just not there, which turns the show into a bland and humorless marathon of complaints and grievances. Complaints and grievances could be comedy gold. George Carlin mined it well, until very late in his career. Alas, Wilmore is no Carlin.Stewart's show, over the years, has had a remarkable supporting cast of correspondents, many of whom went on to great careers (i.e. Carell, Colbert, Oliver, Riggle, Jones, Gad, Helms). Their humor complemented Stewart's and allowed them to play off of each other, presenting loads of opportunity for improvisation. Wilmore has several contributors, but their contributions don't add a whole lot to the show. The recent report by Ricky Velez from the Puerto Rican Day parade should have never seen the light of day. A high school student could've gotten more out of the festivities and done a better job tying it all together.It is also unfortunate that Wilmore (or perhaps his producers and writers) focus the show so much on a very narrow scope of social issues. On the opposite end of this spectrum seats John Oliver, who in his short time at HBO has tackled topics from tobacco use in developing nations, to ticketing debt, to FIFA, to capital punishment. This is only a guess, but I would say that 80% of Wilmore's episodes deal with racism,including petty non-stories, like the school principal, who called out some folks from leaving the school's auditorium early and was devoured by Wilmore, and a steady diet of Bill Cosby. The former is an important issue and the latter more of a distraction. More importantly, constantly keeping to these topics shortchanges Wilmore and turns him into the Chief Black Correspondent again and again, rather than take him beyond his legacy, expanding his reach and strengthening his resume.Admittedly, there are a lot of comparisons being drawn here to Stewart, Colbert, Oliver, and even Carlin. But this is because Wilmore had not been able to find, understand, showcase, and market his own brand of political/social news show comedy. That's another damning criticism. The show is unoriginal. Even the title is lazy and unoriginal. And it should have behooved Wilmore to ask his audience not to chant his name at the start of the show. Colbert did it as a gag, to poke fun at the self-aggrandizing personalities of cable news shows. Why does Wilmore do it? However, the biggest and most egregious failure is the show's sanctimonious, bloodthirsty, and hateful rhetoric supplanting the humorous, witty, and satirical narrative of its predecessors. This is where, in my humble opinion, the show loses its audience. At the very least, it lost me and, as I understand, it lost a good number of friends and acquaintances for the same reason. The latest victim to be lambasted by Wilmore was the hapless dentist, who shot Cecil the Lion. The aforementioned school principal also got skewered and, of course, Wilmore's most favorite victim, Bill Cosby.This is not to excuse these or any other of Wilmore's targets for their conduct or alleged conduct. It is to help demonstrate how in an attempt to comment on important social issues of our day (i.e. racism, illegal trophy hunting, date rape) Wilmore infected a true liberal narrative with hate for these people, missing the larger opportunity to discuss each issue in general, to dig a little deeper. The conversation is two-dimensional, even for cable TV (i.e. hunting is bad and taking down the confederate flag is good). It ignores due process, in case of Cosby and the MN dentist, dehumanizes, and is remarkably authoritarian. All the thinking is done for the audience and social justice turns into mob justice, humorless and quick to judge. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't identify with that.

I find Larry as a natural in the role of late night hosting. He has got that kind of personality that makes you want to become friends with the fella and have a beer with him. Unlike Colbert, who I found too weird and someone who was trying too hard, Mr. Wilmore has more of a natural swagger in his demeanor. Yes the show has some topics that are black people related, but not so much to be frank as other reviewers are hinting. Then again so what? With too many white people related late night show topics around, it kind of gets boring to hear about the same over and over again. As a white person, I enjoy this show as I get to expand my horizon, and learn more about minorities in a good way. And to be honest, the topics are not even black topics as you would think, but a considerable part of his guest are people of color and very funny comedians. Since white late night hosts give opportunities for white guests to come to their shows, it is good that Mr. Wilmore gives the same opportunity to minorities, who otherwise might not get that kind of opportunity on other shows, so it is understandable. One think I specially like about the show, is the keep it 100 part, where guests are given a tough question, which they have to try and answer with honesty. If the spectators on the show like the answer their cheer, and if they think that the guest is lying, they boo. So in fact, this is the kind of show that makes the spectators as a part of the show, where they get to have a say. Not only that, but the guests are also encouraged into giving an honest answer. Like a certain politician on the show, who was given a question, where she had to reply with honesty, not exactly what you would expect from a politician, but again with the help of the cheering/booing from the crowd in the studio, the honesty of her answer was determined. Another great thing about the show is, that it has a natural feel of being a chat show. It is different from other shows because of the fact that you get people from various backgrounds to sit together, like comedians, experts on the topic that is being discussed, and someone who has experienced the topic in discussion. These people sit together around a table and they actually have a chat, where Larry is merely providing the questions. So conclusion is, it is early days for the show, but with a lot of potential. It is different and it has room to grow even bigger and better, but from what I have seen so far, I hope it stays on for a long long time to come.

Larry looks rightly uncomfortable with this. He has done nothing to deserve the level adulation and applause he is getting in the months the show has now been on.This time slot has been reduced to what I think was always intended; a presenter from a different ethnic group promoting exactly the same opinions as Stewart.It would have been better if this was just a panel show.Larry has, for several weeks now, had many golden opportunities to discuss, with some excellent guests, some serious topics and be a positive force in the world or at least make entertaining TV. The producers have squandered every opportunity do this. When covering the news or during the round-table they do there best prevent any reasonable discourse taking place. The NIGHTLY SHOW CONTRIBUTORS are the worst thing about the show. You don't know them, they are unlikeable and their only contribution is to shout about how selfish they are.Larry and the NIGHTLY SHOW CONTRIBUTORS succeed in bringing everything down to a crude and stupid level that makes the audience boo and groan. Larry seems to love this. He seems very happy to just giggles away at the failure. He has often used a term: "KEEP IT 100" to appeal to the audience to accept ignorant or hateful race-baiting. "We're KEEPING IT 100" he says: encouraging the audience to cheer in support for disgraceful statements because they are honest. I expect a lot more exploitative confusing slogans to be promoted on this show to manipulate audience behaviour.The show has a schizophrenic tone. Larry often seems to be telling the audience what to do or not do. He seems bored most of the time and then gets very excited at odd things.Recently Larry was doing dares based on the outcome of sporting events. It was unclear to me if there was any reason he was doing this, I don't remember him mentioning a charity. As an outcome of this arbitary challenge to himself he announced he would be hosting the show in spandex. He was so happy, he couldn't stop giggling. He told the audience as they cheered "No No. I don't want to do this. This isn't good. So I want all of you post pictures of yourselves in spandex with the #spandexsolidarity.". So you don't like it but you want us all to do it. Larry you are bat**** crazy, and not in a good way. I saw the beginning of the spandex show and I've never seen Larry happier or more animated. So clearly he is a liar and I hope to never watch his show again.Colbert had built up a fantastically loyal viewer base for this time slot. It should have gone to the character P.K. WINSOME from The Colbert Report played by Tim Meadows. There are few satirists and Colbert proved it is a very popular format. A satirical show would clearly have been much more entertaining and successful. Tim Meadows has already been, by far, the funniest thing to appear on the Nightly show.IN SHORT: This show is Jon Stewart's egomaniacal Part 2 of a 1 hour long 'The Daily Show'. Larry Wilmore is a feckin disgrace. When this TRAIN WRECK is over maybe someone could give the time slot to Tim Meadows.Thank you Colbert for making a great show for 9 years. They should be showing Colbert re-runs in this time-slot. It would be cheaper and much better than this.

The Nightly Show is the filler for the old Colbert Report time slot. I call it a "filler" because that's all it is to me. Not entertainment. Filler.The show is supported by a backbone of "check out our BLACK host! Look at how black he is!" and, as expected, 90% of Larry Wilmore's humor is race related. I know that currently black people need some support because of the Michael Brown shooting and the Florida police using pictures of black men for target practice, but come on. Bringing up racial issues isn't enough for me to define it as a good show. Lots of black comedians bring up race. In fact it's REALLY rare to NOT see a black comedian joke about race. It's starting to get a bit old.The previous owner of the Nightly Show's time slot, The Colbert Report, covered a variety of issues per episode, WITH a sense of humor. Stephen Colbert had a personality. he did an excellent job as a parody of cable news hosts, yet was unique and bold enough to define himself as a character. Larry Wilmore doesn't have a personality. He just kind of comes off as a regular guy. I'm not saying he needs to play a character, there's nothing wrong with him just being himself. But the problem is, he's really boring to watch. The only thing that defines Larry is his skin color. Which he throws in our faces quite often.Larry is also pretty awkward. He will often attempt to improvise and say something funny (usually to his panel during the "Keep it 100" bit) but usually just kind of trails off into nothing as he realizes that the audience isn't reacting. Then immediately changes the subject. It's pretty obvious that a team of joke writers write his jokes for him. We all know that this is what happens on like, every talk show, but it's really not good when it's obvious. He does a pretty bad job at delivering the jokes. Probably because the only thing he knows how to move on his face are his eyebrows, which remain raised throughout the entire course of his speaking. It's like he's a robot. A robot that asks questions and raises its eyebrows while it attempts to say scripted jokes. Another thing that really bothers me is his speech. During the "Keep it 100" bit, while listing the names of his guests, he slurs his speech like he's on cocaine. There is often a short pause after he says someones name before the audience begins to cheer, probably because nobody understood what he said. He'll be like "And our next guest Andrea adsfipofswrwq!" (short pause) then the audience is like "WOOOOOO!!!". Seriously, pay attention to him while he says ANYONE'S name. He starts tripping over his vowels and consonants like his mouth has it's shoe laces untied.Larry will often bring a single guest on the show and ask them a couple of questions. To which they will recite an obviously scripted response while STARING DIRECTLY INTO THE CAMERA. Even while Larry is talking to them, they are still STARING INTO YOUR SOUL. Not only does this feel really awkward and unnatural, but these guests aren't funny! You can tell the only reason the audience is laughing is because they are aware of the fact that a joke was just said. Not because it was funny. It's like the whole audience was hired for the show and it is their job to listen for cues to laugh or go crazy.Then the show's own original bit, "Keep it 100". Once again, the show is throwing it into your face that the host is black. Keep it 100 is a phrase often used by Wiz Khalifa and other hip hop artists. So OF COURSE it's a bit for Larry Wilmore's show. He'll even pronounce it "Keep it a Hunned" which is how it is pronounced by hip hop artists. Really? Larry is one of the whitest black guys I've ever seen. He's a white black man trying to act black. The bit is just Larry asking loaded questions like "if there's a black man on one side of the street and a white man on the other, which side do you walk on" which is obviously a pathetic attempt to make the audience go "WWOOAAHHHH" as if they're shocked or something. There is no humor during the bit, his guests he invites are often just regular people who aren't trying to be funny. Larry throws in a lame joke every now and then, and that's as good as it gets. There will be like 1 comedian on the panel. 1 comedian you've never heard of.The show just flat out isn't funny. Larry Wilmore is boring, the guests are boring, the jokes are forced, and the topics are stale. If racism weren't a thing, the show wouldn't exist.

This show has potential and Larry Wilmore is OK. I loved his segments on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart but for some reason it is not coming through in his own show. Maybe he is only great in small doses but I have been watching The Nightly Show since it started but it needs to start getting better fast or it could get pulled from the network because looking at these message boards there obviously isn't a lot of love for it.Tonight's show is a good example (airing January 26 2015 since I have no idea when you will read this), with the topic being American snipers since the huge movie at the time is "American Sniper". The stuff off the top with Larry Wilmore was decent and the highlight of the show. He will get better as time goes on I assume. After that there was a character piece with Shenaz Treasure which was just painfully awful. It was five minutes of one joke (we get it, Bradley Cooper is hot) that she just wasn't delivering right. Not funny at all. I'm not looking forward to any more of her bits. Epic fail.The panel discussion was OK and again I think they will feel it out over time. Larry wasn't pitch perfect tonight but he's obviously got a talent for heading up this type of panel and other episodes have been better. Part of the problem was tonight's panel, which didn't give him much funny to work with.The three more serious guests were OK (they were a veterans group representative, a sniper, and the other guy I think was an Iraq War/middle east expert who was very "anti-Bush" in his opinions). None of them were particularly funny but they're obviously not there for that, they have different viewpoints on the week's serious topic and did a fine job presenting that. Where the panel works or fails is with the fourth panelist who is always a comedian of some sort and they are supposed to bring the funny to the table and give Larry help with that part of the show. Too often (at least so far) this guest hasn't been up to snuff and the show has suffered because of it. Case in point tonight's guest, a Canadian lesbian (not that that matters) named Sabrina Jalees was in that seat and brought almost nothing to the table. I hate to have to say it but the two females on the show tonight were just bloody awful and by far the worst parts of the show, hopefully producers will not let them stop them from booking other females in the future who can actually deliver on the funny. Jaleese barely talked at all and when she did her jokes were awkward and completely unfunny, on top of that they had little to do with the panel's discussion or show's topic. Even her answer to the Keep it 100 question was forced, took way too long and was completely unfunny. The sniper and veterans representative were both honestly funnier in their comments than the comedian tonight, and also the Iraq expert came off a bit too hostile (particularly towards the veterans rep) and seemed sort of jerky for lack of a better word.Keep it 100 is very hit or miss just like the panel, for the same reasons, but tonight's panel (aside from Jalees) did quite well with it. Wasn't thrilled with Wilmore's answer tonight as it seemed a bit of a pander (saying he'd serve his country any time) but he really didn't have anywhere else to go with it. I get that he doesn't see the question beforehand and sometimes this makes his answer even funnier but they might want to let him pick the questions or at least see them beforehand to come up with great answers regularly.All in all I will keep watching this show, am still a big fan of Wilmore, and will cross my fingers that they sort this show out soon because I see huge potential and don't want to see it canceled. With such a big part of the show being the panel I hope they'll start booking funnier comedians more regularly. Bill Burr would be great as a semi regular guest!
