It has everything: humor, drama, action, great soundtrack. Great fun! But then you watch episode 24... and WOW!The 3 last episodes are the most perfect writen anime episodes ever. Yeah, some people don't understand it. Some people don't like it. But that's because those 3 episodes are about 1000 years ahead of our time. For the very first time you get inside a character's mind, you understand his problems and his fears. Yeah it's disturbing some times, but isn't real life disturbing?It doesn't matter if you like animes or not, WATCH THIS! But watch from the beginning, or else you will not recieve the final message from episode 26. I'm sure that you will love Evangelion!

This has to be one of the top overrated anime shows ever made. And yes, I was even shown the "End of Evangelion" and that still made me hate it even more. Not to mention the countless rip-offs of this show!I don't mind psychological and philosophy untertones, but Evangelion drags it out into the mud like nothing else! Not many of the characters seemed to be very interesting. The only ones that seemed to be interesting were Asuka, Misato and Pen-Pen. Other than that, mostly everyone else were a bunch of whiny crybaby losers. They need to go to a psyciatric center, not piloting giant robots against aliens called "Angels".Even the mecha and alien fights did not help at all. Goes something like this:"Well, there are these robots, and they are really cool because they bleed(!) when they get hurt, but they are not really mecha, but captured angels, so sometimes they go insane and don't do what the underaged pilots want, and they have to be controlled better...blah blah blah!"I am so sorry, but I just cannot recommend Evangelion to anyone, anime otakus or not. To those who love this series greatly, fine you're entitled to that opinion, I respect you. But to thoses that have a "out of your mind" obsession to think that every one will like this series, you are more of an egotist.I prefer "Macross", "Mospeada", "Run-Dim" and "Robot Taekwon V" myself.

Contrary to most other commentators, I deeply hate this series.It starts out looking interesting, with mysterious aliens and giant robots, and I kept my hopes up until the very last episode. At the end of it, I still didn't understand what the alien attacks were all about (maybe I missed something, who knows?), and realized that I had sat through 26 episodes consisting mainly of the characters' own self-hating, selfishness and self-pitying. It actually flips between alien/robot fights and these dark, depressing blinking-on-and-off scenes where one or more characters shouts "I hate me/you/it" 10-12 times in a row.I can't really see either Shinji or Asuka (two of the main characters) showing growth or change. (Nor can I see any of the other characters learning or growing either, for that matter.) I wanted to kick them and tell them to get a bloody life during the first episodes, and the feeling didn't change during the last ones. Shinji truly possesses the kind of helpless hopelessness that makes people angry rather than charitable, and Asuka is such an infuriating know-it-all that I wanted to smash the TV screen every time she came into view. Oh, and more than anyone else, these two hate everything, and say it veeeeeeeery often. Shinji even makes a half-assed attempt at suicide. Please, explain to me why I should give a rat's ass about this animé, when even it's characters are trying to off themselves to get out of it.I'm otherwise a big fan of animé and manga, and never before have I disliked one so much. I read that the series creator/writer wrote this while suffering from a depression, and I can believe that; it made me depressed to watch it. Is that the aim of this series? I'm honestly asking. Is it designed to make the viewer confused and annoyed? And if suffering from a depression, why just not write a book or biography about it, instead of mixing it up with aliens and mecha's? This alien war plot, as far as I could tell, lead to absolutely nowhere.Finally, since I'm truly fascinated by how many people claim to love this patchwork of dead-end plots, I can't help but wonder how many of them actually find it good, and how many say they do because they've been told it is.

Before I watched the anime I heard about it through word of mouth and from Wikipedia. After watching it I felt extremely disappointed. At first it intrigued me with it's first episodes and interesting characters. It echoed the classic style of mecha anime with episodes centered on the EVA - Angel battles. The character development was going slowly but steadily. Everybody had their quirks and flaws, since few anime characters are flawless. However, after the 18 episode, which I felt was the most impressive in terms of emotion, the show has gone downhill. The animation is reused , and all of the characters personalities decay. After watching the final 8, I was disgusted with the characters, thinking how could I have favoured such an anime that has mentally disturbed characters. From a melancholy Shinji, soulless Rei, to an egotistical Asuka & heartless Gendo, all characters are clear mental cases. The final 2 episodes, which were not in "the real world" so to speak, infuriated me since they were just the directors buffer for his own Freudian theories, ideas, and everything else he copied out of dear Freud's books.The movie helped increase the shows value but it still gave me a sense of dread as to what the director had in mind for the series. What creeps in Anno's mind I dare not speculate, since he made the show on his breakdown experience. I even dare say that he left half of the character's stories unfinished leaving me even more distanced form them. I usually prefer the love - hate choice when it comes to anime characters, so I am baffled by the fact that I left all characters, in the end, in the undetermined position. My final vote is 6, because I liked it at the start, and hated it at the end.My anime of choice is Vision of Escaflowne, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell, which also has philosophical questions but answers them in a more direct and introspective manner. Even the gory Akira is on my list because of it's political and evolutionary motifs. A final word of note is that if you want to ask and give psychological questions and answers, do it with characters we can relate to. I doubt most people could relate to mentally disturbed characters.

Fast forward to t...he year 2010 GEHIRN has changed into NERV a military organization. NERV's primary mission is to locate creatures called Angles and destroy them. The primary story follows Shinji Ikari who decides to join NERV and his father is the head of NERV.Now onto all the problems with this show.First is the story: I'm not sure what the creators of this series/movies were trying to do, but they failed miserably. The story as it went on from episode to episode and movie to movie just got worse and worse as it went a long. The story was incoherent and didn't make any sense. I don't mind series that try to have a higher meaning, but at least make some kind of sense at the end, express something even if it's that everyone dies.Second the characters: I think this might have been my biggest problem with the series. The characters brought nothing to the series. The main character Shinji has to be one of the worst if not the worst anime character ever. He had no depth, emotion, and didn't try me in. He was just annoying, and I wanted him to die almost from the beginning, the same with most of the other ones. I can't think of on character I actually liked.Third the animation: The animation done by GAINAX is terrible it looks like something done by in the 60s or 70s. Hell I think Speed Racer looks better than this series.Overall this is the worst anime series ever and most overrated series I've seen. I really don't understand why people like it. If they want to see a great anime series with meaning then you should check out series like Saikano, RahXephon, and Now and Then, Here and There just for example. Rich in symbolism and spectacular visuals, EVA will leave an impression on you if you watch it closely and understand what is happening. The major theme in EVA is that because we are individuals, we cannot completely understand each other. That is the cause of all the world's problems, large and small. Even the Angels, Adam, Lilith, and the Evangelions are actually human. They are our distant ancestors, and possibilities of what we may have evolved into.The visuals in EVA are superb, form the designs of the EVAs and Angels, to the character designs, camera angles, and unique visuals (the close-up of EVA-01's head with it's teeth showing as it roared out in pure primal rage was awe-inspiring.The End of the series is hard to understand. Basically, because we are individuals, we are flawed. By using Adam, Lilith and the EVAs, humanity plans to "evolve" into one being, so that we may truly understand and accept ourselves as a whole. What is happening in episodes 25 and 26 is that as we all become one being, all minds are put together, and everyone can see that which others had wished to hide deep in their minds forever.EVA is a masterpiece, and I think one quote that I came up with a while ago sums it up:Evangelion makes Shakespeare look like a first-grader's creative writing assignment.

I hate everything this series has to offer, everything it represents, everything it was, still is and will ever be.Its not clever its not thoughtful its not insightful. All it is is someone telling you to give up die, succumb, surrender, give in. It preys upon the weakness of human ego and it tries to convince you that its okay to be pathetic.As long as I have lived their has always been films and shows which have tried to bring about something positive. Something telling me to reach higher, to push myself to be the best that I can be.All this anime has to offer the world is the sad bleak vision distorted into a disgusting vague medium with absolutely no sound message whatsoever.Firstly the characters are all bland, gormless exhibitions of the human condition. Shinji is by far the worst character in anime hands down. He's a selfish, weak, subservient coward who would rather wallow in his own woes then face up to the world and his responsibility. There are people in the world far worse of then him and yet he finds that his problems are all important. Even when he is given the opportunity to do good he cowers away rather than step up and make a difference. Rei is a girl who is a mobile manikin, who's purpose is to stand blankly looking into nothing whilst delivering generic monologues just like the rest of this forsaken cast. Asuka acts almost remotely human at first but when stuck with these inwardly dead humanoids she also finds herself suffering from the mental angst. As you can expect from most animes the people here are all form the same generic character molds.The plot is a throwaway one involving using giant mechas to fight aliens. But believe me that simplest of descriptions provides all the entertainment you can glean from this husk of a show. As most of their filler slot time is filled with still shots accompanied by limited character interaction along with redundant recycled audio sound such as those bird sounds that are heard every episode.The themes shown in the haziest of details are psychological concepts such as the hedgehog syndrome, but you would only know this if you were to actually read about the synopsis of the show and know about the syndrome in the first place. This means adding these concepts in the show is little more than referencing since the only way as to fully understand this would be to know through an outside source. Even then the conceptual ideas are on the instabilities of the human mind and other ailments to the psyche with no true understanding on what they are or how to deal with them in the show. It doesn't ask the questions or give the answers it whispers monotonously trying to lull you into a poor man's hypnosis.The last few episodes even the movie are notable for their lack of any coherent plot despite what the fans chanter. It's not a matter of a deep intricate philosophical debate more a psychedelic yonder into the realms of insanity, in other words its what to expect in hell.This series is the worst human nature has to offer its every bit as dystopian as can be, every bit depraved and vulgar.For all you fans who would blindly follow this series its a hell you deserve.

A lot of people tend to look away from mecha anime as little more than giant robots duking it out. However, this is not always the case, as "Neon Genesis Evangelion" certainly proves. Directed and written by Hideaki Anno, also responsible for the excellent Wings of Hommenaise and the underrated Gunbuster, Evangelion starts out somewhat similar to it's predecessor "Gundam"(The first one, not "Wing" on Cartoon Network). A young boy is thrown head first into combat against his will, piloting the mecha his father made. Although it starts off simplisticly, eventually Evangelion expands into a story that asks intriquing questions about humans and their purpose, mixing in conspiracy and religious symbolism to make things even more interesting. We follow Shinji's viewpoint, and watch as he goes through the many ups-and-downs of being a pawn in a very dangerous, potentially apocalyptic game. There are some comic relief moments, of course, which make eventual developments even more shocking, and even somewhat ironic. The animation is well done, although still shots are used a few times, although more for atmosphere than money-saving. The Evangelion/angel battles are beautifully done-hardly any cheats-and some of the character animation is well done too. So if you haven't seen Eva, I suggest you check it out-you won't be dissiapointed.

This show is trying to do two things all the way through, almost as if there are two writers blattling it out. The first is trying to write a good, complex story involving robots. The second is trying to create deep, emotionally disturbed characters and detail their journey of self discovery.It basically tells the story of an annoying little boy who's dad wanted to dump him in a robot. There's some good humour, funny characters and entertaining "robot gets mad" style scenes. There's also a very obscure manipulation of characters from the Christian bible, very twisting plot and generally sadomasacistic desire to leave you confused and unsettled.It's one of the best anime I've watched but also the most confusing, I had to rewatch episodes and look stuff up on the internet but it's all quite entertaining if you've got free time or like understanding philosophical stuff.Episode 19 is a nice re-cap, if you get the DVD/VHS, just don't watch this. 25 and 26 were abandoned later to be replaced by Death and Rebirth (followed by End of Evangelion). The second writer got complete dominance on 25 and 26 :P

From what I've read, this was a very innovative series when it arrived in the mid nineties, so some of my reaction might have been different 17 years ago. Watching it now, a lot of it feels like stuff I've seen too many times before, but this series may well have come up with many of these ideas first. But there are other aspects of this show that would have been no better in 1995 than they are now.I found the early episodes just barely held me. There would be intriguing moments, but it just seemed like some giant-robot-battle series, and that's not something I'm really into.The occasional hints that there was more to the series than appeared on the surface didn't pay off until about two thirds of the way through the show. At that point things got more interesting, but they also got more confusing. An episode that goes back 15 years left me completely perplexed, throwing a bunch of poorly delineated characters at me and confusing me more at a time when it should have been clarifying things.The final episodes of the series threw weird ideas right and left as the show wandered entirely away from its mecha roots. Any hopes that the show would actually ever explain much of anything were laid to rest. The final famously aggravating episodes completely changed gears, offering some sort of emotional resolution but not a narrative one. At all. The show ended with its story completely unraveled.I'm probably going to watch the final Evangelion movie at some point because it presumably finishes the series' story in a way that the actual series didn't. But I'm not that hopeful that I'll be satisfied. The series is clearly written by someone who cared only for the characters and the psychology rather than the story.On the other hand, the characters are pretty interesting, with more depth and more complex histories than are typical of anime series. There are interesting moments in the series, although many of them open up mysteries that are never resolved. At times it was genuinely interesting, but it was all too much of a mess to be fully satisfying.

NGE places Biblical metaphors, Jewish myths, as characters and the whole plot's symbolism throughout. and there is Kierkegaard's notion about 'three stages of the human existence', similar with 'three impacts on the earth'. even the episode 16 has a Japanese title that exactly means one of his writing, 'the sickness unto death'.Kierkegaard, who is Danish solifidian existential philosopher, said every human unconsciously have the anxiety and the despair because we don't know what we should do, where we came from, where we were meant to be gone, in the middle of the world, with plenty of other lives, the losing the purpose of the life and God(liken to Sinji's father, Asuka's mother)'s love. and after all, we suffer the despair, the same thing that Sinji undergoes. and K' refers to the human existence in the form of three stages, composed with the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious, also similar with 'three impacts' or 'three cases' in the episode 25, 26.He argues, that most important other than anything, all of these ego-improvement process, is have to be done only by the an individual's free will, not by others', deep awakening in frond of God by the own will is needed to do overcome the sickness unto death as Sinji finally completes.Meanwhile, an individual never can't understand perfectly the others as the ego and the other self, the other's view on an individual's ego, are totally different. so Sinji and Rei suffer the loneliness from this, which makes us to got conflicts, killings, wars all over the world endlessly. but if our bodies and spirits put together, we could evolve to understand every the other's thing in the state, can't possibly define whether it's 'we' or just alone. Seele want humanity to be one under the 'human completion plan'. this kind of notion is associated with Husserl, Heidegger, and Sartre's philosophical theory.Anyway, I won't enumerate it more. overall, this animation doesn't explain/clear a thing. the scenario is hard to follow if you didn't see it very carefully. only I can say about this Anime is surely odd, exquisite as well. and I'm sure the director is someone like Japanese Stanley Kubrick. he gave me a serious headache.

Although Eva begins like almost any mech anime series, it quickly transcends the traditional bounds typical of such anime and becomes a fascinating piece of character study in an apocalyptic setting. While the action is sometimes excessive and often takes away from the psychological aspect, the premise itself is quite fascinating.Eva heavily borrows from various religious dogma, and that is one of the reason it has a mystical, albeit often nonsensical atmosphere (Lance of Longinus is an example of religious allegory which misfired). Lots of time is spent on various pseudo-technological scenes, the only good thing about that being that it nicely contrasts with the religious thematics. "Fan Service" was also mostly unnecessary.Overall, Eva is a fascinating anime but does not fulfill all of its potential. The characters, although are fascinating and have great interaction, are static (although the writers try to make them seem dynamic) and their emotional makeup sometimes does not smoothly flow from episodes to episodes.Nonetheless, despite its flaws, this is a great series. It grabs onto the viewer like few others, and only later can be analyzed without bias. Saying that it is thought-provoking would be an understatement. Everyday life is beautifully juxtaposed with the apocalyptic motifs, creating a nostalgic feel (which is especially worthy of praise because the anime takes place in the future). It is vague yet involving, impressionist in the sense that it affects the viewer like no other. Great musical score raises it above many others. Although a detailed unbiased analysis may show multiple flaws in various areas, as a whole Evangelion is amazing. Recommended to anyone who can appreciate art as a whole without looking too much into specific details, and is involving even after multiple viewings.9/10

Evangelion blows your mind. First few episodes may seem like regular giant-robot-post-apocalyptic nonsense for kiddies but soon it begins to unmask itself. The background story is very complicated and not every detail of it is ever revealed. Characters are developed more than in many regular movies out there. Simply lovable.The show can feel ultimately silly, weird, technologically naive, even insane. But it has a purpose - you shall experience every mood and emotion thinkable over the episodes. Pure originality seeps out of the series all the time. But it's all just the beginning. The real weirdness, packed with substance nonetheless, comes in the last three episodes. No matter how you will anticipate the story would end, it won't be anywhere near the real conclusion. I can't describe it without spoiling it. Evangelion just blows your mind.9/10

If you hate anime watch it! Be warned though it looks deceptively simple at first. To get its full effect you must be willing to watch the entire series.

My Mother bought me the boxset off this that ADV released as a Christmas present last year and I must say I felt like bowing to me saying giving her a thousand thank you's.This is the best show ever created, the characters are so lovable and their backgrounds are so depressing, this is how all anime's should be made that try to make statements that psychologicly screw you up and keep you glued to the screen, breath taken.This show starts off on quite a light level and by the end you'll be broken down in tears, and really makes you think about life.This is a classic in anime.10 out of 10

The Evangelion series is based on some of Sigmund Freuds non discussed theories and banned portions of the Bible that the mainstream do not know about but are well documented. The series points out what the original Bible does, shows the dualities we face in life whereas the homogenized version of the bible(new testament) would have you believe in a more monotheistic point of view. The mention of Lillith in this series which is Adams real first wife in the Bible not Eve as the newer versions of the bible would have you believe. Its hard to comprehend some portions of this Anime series without knowing a little about the unknown portions of the Bible such as the mentioning of Lillth and the Angels and Eva's. The Eva's are humankinds attempt at making the Angels which in the bible fell from heaven. The angels in this interpretation are trying to destroy mankind instead of eating them like in the original bible transcripts(Same idea). This series is a great interpretation of a lot of unknown aspects of the Bible and throwing in a little Freud and some elements of B.F. Skinners take on behaviours(such as the Absolute Terror Field which is created by children without a strong Female in their life,usually males Frued states abused children can create an AT barrier to keep others away)(Hypotheticaly but in this series it visually appears as a shield or as an attack weapon as in the knife). On the outside this is a great animated movie by studio Gainax/ studio I.G. but when your dwelve into the actual plot of is so beautifully orchestrated chaos. The game Xenogears was loosely based off this anime although more on the Psych aspect. This series has yet to be matched by any anime. I caught wind of this anime since I'm a big fan of MacrossPlus. I've been an anime fan since my pops went to Japan in the early 80s and always had awesome Mecha toys when he came back. This is a series you cannot passup. Rent them or buy them but take an entire day because you'll want to just watch the entire series all the way thru, its that good.

Whether you enjoy the world of anime or not this is an experience you must have before you die. Nothing else in the world is like it. For the sake of your personal experience I cannot tell you much about it and here's why. The first 20 some episodes you are immersed in the semi-futuristic world of Tokyo 3 and the characters are developed beautifully, some of the best character development I've ever witnessed. You get a very very good feel for the world and the situation they live in, only to have that blown away in the final episodes. Please for the sake of yourself watch this, from the start, you will not regret it.Hideaki Anno has conceived of a story more important to my life than any other.Hideaki Anno is pure genius.

I'm not an anime fan. I tried this because of the reviews it gathered and after watching this I checked out other anime-titles. I couldn't have been more disappointed. No other anime even tried to approach the quality of this series.The series start off simple enough. A boy is 'chosen' to fight big monsters in a robot. However, the monsters seem to be less important than the troubles the people face fighting them.Although Shinji is no coward by any standard, he's a very troubled person. He hates himself and his father. He needs people around him but they are a constant source of pain. He's a loner, but he doesn't like it much.Not a single major character is one-dimensional. Rei is a bit of an enigma, but you could imagine how this very intelligent girl would develop into someone resembling Ritsuko. Asuka is the brass, loud and overconfident girl who's smarter than she appears. Misato seems to be an emotional shut-in but she tries to enjoy life to the fullest. Ritsuko seems perfect at first, an intelligent career woman who's reliable and self-sufficient. And definitely last is Gendo, the commander : cold and focused, dealing with the threat as well as the constant verbal attacks of the Seele-members. Any major character could be analyzed as they grow throughout the series.The first 15 episodes could be considered semi-light fare. Enjoyable and although there are several hints dropped along the way, nothing really gets out of hand too far. The series grow however, and after the 15th episode, the masks are taken off one by one, and it's not a pretty sight. By the end of it all, the series have asked immortal questions like what are we, why are we here and is life worth all the pain that goes with it. For once these questions don't sound trite as the characters have a very good reason for asking.Disturbing through the fate and behaviour of it's protagonists, stripping away all illusions about what men are and the horrors we are capable of, the series still manage to retain sympathy for it's characters and a spark of hope for mankind.The series are not perfect. There's some fan-service,corny moments and situations that don't seem logical, especially in the first part of the series. But the many layers and genuine characters more than make up for it. In this case, the endresult outweigh the sum of it's part tremendously.There are 101 reasons why the series have become how they are now. Production problems (time and money), Hidalgo's personal situation, the fans, the critics and so on. You can find socio-economic, theological and psychological analysis of this work. All very well written, interesting and equally valid. Whatever interests you, this series can make you think and hopefully feel.I've only given 3 movies a 10. This is one of them. The rating is for the series+the movie. Powerful and unique.

What starts out as a simple "save the world" mecha story evolves into a shocking and powerful psychological drama full of conspiracy, dysfunctional characters, and some of the most harrowingly emotional and painful fight scenes ever. Don't let the first several episodes fool you- they're entertaining enough, but the power of the series remains hidden.When I popped in the first video, I was excited to see a new anime, but otherwise pretty relaxed. By the end of episode 18 or so, my heart was racing, and I was nearly in tears. It never let up after that. This is not just an anime. This is an experience.
