Someone is playing a game, and they've only just begun! It's the show's writers! The pilot was bad. Having just given episode 2 a chance, I have very little hope for this show. Let's roll back the wheels of time to the pilot...A bomb specialist is called to a completely empty Times Square to investigate a strange duffel bag. He is shaking, terrified, spasmodic: he speaks nervously, his voice cracking and quaking with fear: have NYPD's bomb techs actually never seen a potential bomb before? Was he like an off duty subway worker that the NYPD dressed up in bomb squad gear and sent into (vacant) Times Square? Then a naked woman climbs out of the duffel, and the officer (or whoever he is) jumps back, absolutely terrified, and holds her at gunpoint. Really? Honestly? And in the middle of a bust involving evil villains and adorable children, as I remember, in Kentucky, the lead detective is whisked away by helicopter, magically absolving him of paperwork, follow-up or leading his team in finishing the bust. Because a naked woman has his name tattooed on her back. Very believable.Now comes the series of scenes I like to call abbreviations: the show jumps from one scene to another, assuming the audience has seen enough procedural dramas that they will fill in the details with stereotypes and overused tropes, so the writers don't have to explain what's going on. The beautiful geeky girl who knows how to run every possible test on a women with no memory covered in tattoos, because that just happens all the time; the sidekick investigators who ask dramatic questions dramatically, like "who is this woman?"; and of course the tough, pessimistic commander who doesn't trust anyone. They'll get to the bottom of this! Now we get to Jane: she's apparently a tough as nails amnesiac who was once a black ops Navy seal, but any time she shoots someone she needs to cry on a man's shoulder and act mopey and despondent. Like all Navy seals do... All she remembers is music (but not the Beatles!), how to shoot automatic weapons, how to speak obscure dialects of Chinese (which according to Chinese-speaking reviewers here the writers got completely wrong), and what chopped grass tastes like. Oh, and the layout of NYC.Of course the beautiful geeky tech girl deciphers the exact tattoos that lead to a case happening in like two hours...Cause she's awesome like that. Chinese villains! Bombs in the subway! An evil mastermind who knows everything that's going to happen! All in a day's work for our crack FBI team.Now we get to the second episode. The geek girl finds the exact right tattoo to lead to a deadly plot happening in like 2 hours. Then we get every empathetic, tug at Middle America's heart strings plot conceivable. A nine year old girl is kidnapped! (Leading one of our transparent characters to comment that the lead detective agent guy "doesn't do well with kidnapped children.")Innocent Americans are being killed as collateral damage! A hero has turned on his country! Where's the part of the show where people are upset that middle aged white guys are getting killed? Nowhere... only adorable girl children and innocent Americans need apply to the heart-string-pulling-acts-of-aggression that spur our heroes into action! In the middle of all this, Jane Doe remembers shooting a nun. And lead detective agent guy magically knows who Jane Doe is because she has the same scar on her neck that his adorable neighbor girl had before she mysteriously disappeared 25 years ago, leaving dad as the prime suspect. Very believable! I expected the next plot twist to be someone killing a dog, or grandma running out of food for the orphans, but no: next was "dad's dying and we don't have much time to make amends." Oh good. I was worried for that dog.Oh, and the nun was just a middle aged guy in khakis with a white sheet on his head. That white sheet could have fooled anybody! Phwew, the Navy Seal trained assassin killer is good, not bad! After all, as one shallow badly written character points out, "only terrible people do terrible things. Good people do good things." Or something like that: I probably wrote that line better than the show's writers.I'll leave the other huge plot holes---3 agents covering the entire city during two different terrorist attacks, Chinese people being 'the bad guys' who beat their wives and blow up the city, etc. etc.---to the other reviewers here. I understand their indignation. In an age when broadcast TV has to compete with cable and Netflix shows, with amazing writing and great acting, it's amazing to me that NBC felt like this show was going to be the great thriller of the season. To me, it's the amazing flop of the season.

So, the premise to this had me intrigued, though I was wary of getting into yet another procedural series. It turns out my concerns were justified.Blindspot is a decently made TV show. There's nothing to complain about as far as production values goes and most of the cast give decent performances.Where it falls down is in its utter formula writing. There isn't much here that you haven't seen before in every other cop/FBI drama from the last few years. It sets up an ongoing mystery in the form of Jane Doe, a woman who has lost her memory completely, and whom has been covered head to foot in tattoos by someone. Getting to the bottom of the why's and how's will make up the bulk of the story arc for both her character, and the show's overall. In essence, it is a reworking of the Blacklist character arc for Agent Keen. Each of the tattoos holds a secret and this will be the basis for each episode - a tattoo puzzle to be solved before something bad happens whilst giving some small tidbit of information on the overall plot.Jamie Alexander gives a decent performance as Jane Doe and most of the cast are good, or at least competent. The sole standout to this rule is Sullivan Stapleton. He seems woefully miscast here. He does try, but mostly he just ends up looking awkward and uncertain what he's meant to be doing. He does look the part, physically, but in terms of portrayal... not so much. For a minor character this would be ignorable, but as he's the male lead, it shows up far too much. He is definitely the weak link in the ensemble.Beyond that, there isn't much to say, or recommend, Blindspot. It is a typical police procedural/mystery to be solved affair like any other. It is difficult to see how it is going to keep its head above water in this genre when there are the likes of Elemental, The Blacklist, Person of Interest or Even Castle as alternatives.SUMMARY: Average police procedural. Poor leading man. Recycled plot devices from other, similar shows. Totally formulaic and predictable.

***Absolutely contains spoilers, but I hope it will help you from spoiling your evening***"One thing's for certain," says the extremely cheesy Sullivan Stapleton, a questionable choice for the series' leading man, whose Milo-Rambaldi-esque necessity to the plot is certain to reveal itself through agonizingly and unnecessarily slow seasons of pseudo revelations aimed to win over his skepticism, a job that should already have been achieved by a massive back tattoo, "someone is playing a game, and they've only just begun." And with that wholly empty declaration that would have made apparent acting coach, Steven Seagal, proud, NBC declares it is uninterested in quality and depth in its writing. It has no care to indulge in the grit of a narrative, where a capable woman of great skill and intellect was somehow overpowered by her circumstances, deprived of her past, violated, all for much more important, darker ends. It merely seeks to entertain you in the same way Flash Forward, or Revolution have sought in the past. The formula is simple: there is a great secret, with possibly global consequences, and the creators are going to string this out for as long as possible. In their journey to understand the answers, our heroes will likely solve smaller puzzles or help others along the way -- all the while learning more about each other, likely, nauseatingly finding a spark or fulfillment in their pairing. Beyond the vapid dialogue, what is most irritating is the immensely clean set. Why do the networks insist that our government agencies have such clean offices, high-tech gadgets, diverse work staff? Why would our government have some sort of person-sized laser-scanning device on a lazy susan? Just in case someone covered in tattoos is found in Times Square and needed to be scanned? Make sure to scan her in a substantially dark room -- that would help with the photos, while ensuring a network-standard of modesty. At one point, I felt as if I was watching late episodes of 24. NBC takes pride in that comparison, where they aught not. 24 was an implausible, formulaic series (often derivative of itself) -- only slightly salvaged in the moments it offered Sutherland. Like Sutherland, series focal point, Jaimie Alexander is clearly capable, possibly overqualified, for this role. Her internal struggles -- coping with the challenges of learning everything about your life as a grown adult -- are interesting. Even there, however, the stereotypical network direction leans heavily on the draw of Alexander's loveliness rather than her suffering. It does Alexander's character no favors that the writers have chosen to surround her with constantly incapable boobs, who just happen to run national security. And even there, the writers don't intend to present these side characters as idiots, as counterpoint to highlight the hero's struggles. Rather, their ineptitude is merely the vehicle by which these writers can elongate the process of telling their secrets.The final step in the formula for this type of conspiratorial pilot is to provide a "mind-blowing" revelation at the end -- it is an offering to the audience, as if to suggest they will not drag this thing out, that all details are key to this story. But we've already seen this series before. We already knew -- despite all characters scratching their heads as to who could possibly have done this to her -- that she did it to herself. Nevertheless, the final scene shows our hero complicit with the presumed villain/terrorist (whom we know is going to be more complicated than that -- see: Season 2 of Lost) in erasing her memory. The implication is that she tattooed herself with a roadmap to her intended ends. The series hopes you'll constantly ask yourself whether she is "good" or "bad," as if those are the only choices. NBC hopes you won't deny that the roadmap saved lives: "she could be the most important resource we've ever had." NBC doesn't care about telling a good story. NBC just wants to distract you with pretty sets, eyes and skin. It's a shame -- like most stories told on TV, it could be an interesting adventure, if network executives weren't so concerned with stretching to 5 seasons in order to gain secondary revenue through syndication sales.Watch it or not, but don't fool yourself that this is something new or well-told.

Since the days of Michael Scofield from Prison Break it's been a rare occasion that a character has plot line literally tattooed on their body. Blindspot offers a couple of intriguing gimmicks and mysteries with the premise of savant consultant and stern officer, but it tends to be the same investigation cop drama again. Its original hook might not endure its barren plot device, underlying secret or romance subplot.Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) pops up in Time Square, wearing nothing but full body tattoo. After thorough inspections, some of these flesh drawings are related to ongoing crime or terrorist act. It becomes clear that this will be your typical case-of-the-week gimmick, while the main plot of her mysterious identity is gradually revealed.The most successful example of this premise in recent time is Blacklist. Unfortunately, Blindspot doesn't have the charismatic lead character, it goes with a more vulnerable Jane Doe for more sympathy effect. The other role of agent (Kurt Weller) Sullivan Stapleton, since the procedural show needs one authority figure for the dysfunctional buddy cop role, is not really memorable.These two serve as eccentric consultant and stoic agent, which may have a bit romance subplot. It's honestly a bit dull, but Blindspot still has a shot with the mystery. The use of her tattoos can be interesting as long as it's consistent and not random patches for typical cop show. Psychology aspect should not fall to usual amnesiac cliché, which can be hard considering the premise, but it already sets Jane Doe for her own personality.It also keeps the setting as part of story. The later episodes might not have grand Times Square or famous landmarks, but if it continues to played out in more natural environment aside, not just dreary office or facility, it will be more realistic to audience. It'd be even better if the tattoo or symbology could correspondent to distinct plot or particular of the episode.There's a lot of inherit hindrances of this theme. For example, how much influence this girl can have or how the series handle the memory loss. It may pique audience's curiosity with the concept, but it would be a tough sell since the other elements feel overused.

I can't wait to see it, when I finally saw it, I am so shocked by the discrimination in it. In this show, Chinese is the stereo type as the violent people who beats up his wife, who attacks the women, who is terrorist, you name it. I was so shocked but I still finished it to see if there is any explanation about those people just is an example, but no. The logic is so chaotic, it shows the writer didn't do any homework about the different Chinese local accent they use in the TV show. First of all, the tattoo on Jane Doe's body is Chinese character, she is speaking the Mandarin in the FBI office, when they go to the Chinatown, the guy in the apartment speaks Cantonese, then actually they are talking about Wenzhou accent, this is just the language part, the Chinese characters will still be the same. Can the writers do some homework if it is such a big show? Talking about the stereo type, which of course, even the suspect is a GE engineer, and he of course lives in small apartment like a rat and tried to tear down the stature of liberty using the bomb. I actually get used to see the Chinese was described as the lower class people in all kinds of movies and TV shows, but I am never so angry, disappointed and sad that now Chinese was described as the terrorist. I never feel any discrimination in my personal life, we should not judge people by their colors. For the sad situation, the kind of show is so popular, this kind of mindset would not help different people to know each other, to understand each other, but build up the wall between each other. This is just the first episode of the show, I don't know how it will go, I know my voice is small and my review probably would not mean anything, but I just want everyone to know that this discrimination is really really a bad thing and will hurt people's feeling.

In the run-up to this show's premiere, it was called a "Female Jason Bourne". There are the obvious similarities--the lead character has no past memories and is an adept fighter. But I think the similarities may end there.Our Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) is found in a duffle bag in Times Square, covered in new tattoos. One is the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton). This is the first clue in a game with unknown stakes. Weller is your typical tough-guy FBI agent who is all business. Jane has no past memories, but she still retains skills. She is able to translate a tattoo written in Chinese (clue #2). It's the name of a Chinese national and an address located across town. And the chase is on. Weller takes Jane along, mostly for her translation skills, but while there, they find that her muscles have "memories"--fighting skills (clue #3). Using infrared to identify an obscured tattoo, they discover what seems to be a Navy SEAL insignia (clue #4). As they chase the suspected terrorist, other clues reveal themselves--indications of Jane's identity and/or information that leads them toward a potential crime scene. I won't reveal any other clues here, but the entire story revolves around the decoding of the tattoos.On a human level, the victim--Jane--asks "Why me?" She has no identity without her memories and she feels emotionally adrift. "I have no where to go," she says, wondering what she will do for the first night of her indeterminate future. Alexander plays her character with the right blend of emotional vulnerability and growing empowerment as she discovers her abilities.By the end of the first episode, she has her first memory. It includes a man who is watching from the shadows. Is she a Trojan horse, used to infiltrate the agency or its affiliates? Is she a "Manchurian candidate", designed to strike at a target? Did she willingly have her memory wiped? Or did circumstances give her little choice? Part of the answer may be linked to the DOJ file that sits on the desk of Weller's superior, which was referenced by a tattoo of its file number.This is a police procedural, but it is dominated by its core mystery, which is a puzzle. There are some clichés. But the photography is strong. And the characterizations, especially Jane, are fun to watch. I will grade the show a conditional "7" and watch to see where the rabbit hole takes them.

From the technical end the cinematography is decent, some good use of disjointed transitions here and there, off angle shots and close ups occasionally done in a shaky cam style, keeping with the off kilter situations in the story, enhancing tension or emotional moments competently.The tattoos as a main plot device of the show was a good idea, and they are backed up with a decent enough design that works well with the actress' body, very much causing the eye to linger on her form as they are designed to do, but other than those, there is nothing that really stands out about the rest of the characters visually.The opening had to be one of the best parts of the episode, perhaps one of the more interesting first grand entrance for a character this year on a television show so far. The symbolic imagery of birth is not lost on anyone, but it does work with the premise of the show, and the expression on that poor bomb diffuser's face was rather amusing, adding to the surreality of the scene.Jane Doe herself displayed just the right amount of emotion and confusion given the situation she is in, and was perhaps the only character so far that has shown anything attempting real personality, though that is likely because she is the main character and thus the main focus of the show. Kurt so far is rather stiff and flavourless, like a lama bean, without much going on except his name on Jane's back, having yet to display anything original or interesting about him, though his character may improve further down the line, once the show uses some episodes to let the other characters into the personality pool.As for the plot of the episode, the premise is interesting, the opening itself seemed intriguing, as did Mr. Mystery Beard as the token shadowy figure. It had a good pace, and took a few moments to allow emotions into play on part of Jane. The bombing of a US icon by a foreigner agent was somewhat old hat though, and was the least interesting part of the episode. Hopefully the future cases will be a bit more creative and not the rehash we get with these types of shows over and over again.Overall the first episode is functional as a premiere, with decent narrative flow, good cinematography that helped to heighten or enhance emotions and tension in the episode, good acting on part of Jaimie Alexander, and the premise is somewhat interesting, but the rest of the characters need work, particularly Kurt, to be something more than the dangerous treading ground of character tropes. this is something to watch if your into crime procedural dramas that have an overarching mysterious plot.
